Tsion Avital (born February 21, 1940) is an Israeli philosopher of art and culture. ==Biography== Tsion Avital was born to Avraham and Preciada Dorit Avitbol Avital, and grew up in the town of Sefrou in Morocco. Avital immigrated to Israel with his family in January 1951, when he was eleven. His higher education from B.A. through Ph.D. was at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His B.A.was in philosophy and psychology, his M.A. in philosophy, focusing on aesthetics and with complementary studies in the Department of Art History. His Master's thesis was on "An Outline of Artonomy," (the concept "Artonomy" is explained below), under the supervision of Professors Yehuda Elkana and Eddy Zemach. He received his doctorate in 1974. During his doctoral studies he spent 1971-1972 at the University of Toronto in Canada, where he performed a series of experiments which verified his hypotheses on the possibility of a structural paradigm in art. His doctoral dissertation was on "Artonomy: a new type of art and its implications for art education in the future" (1974). This research was done under the supervision of Professors Daniel Berlyne and Anatol Rapoport of the University of Toronto, and Professor Moshe Caspi of Hebrew University. In 1973 Avital was appointed lecturer at Hebrew University, and in 1976 he resigned from the university. Since the universities as well as other colleges recoiled from his ideas on art, he was unable to obtain employment in his field in any academic institution in Israel, and so for five years he managed a rubber and plastics plant in the Holon Industrial Zone. In 1982 he began teaching at the Faculty of Design at HIT, the Holon Institute of Technology. In 1997 he was appointed Senior Lecturer, in 1999 was granted tenure and in 2003 appointed Full Professor, with no prior appointment as Associate Professor.
